Online Latin Dictionary

Probably the most popular of the ancient Indo-European languages, Latin was originally spoken in a region surrounding Rome – Latium. Over a short period of time it managed to grow and become the language of the Roman Republic and afterwards of the Roman Empire.

The progressive expansion of the powerful Roman Empire helped Latin spread across Europe and even reach some distant corners of the world.

Although it is still used by the Catholic Church, Latin no longer has any native speakers and thus it is rightfully considered a “dead language”. However, Latin is still studied and taught in schools and Latin texts continue to be translated for academic purposes mostly.

Ecclesiastical Latin is the official language of Vatican City and, considering the power the Catholic Church still masters, it will probably manage to survive the centuries to come.

Are you wondering how long it takes to learn to speak German? This query has no real answer. The mode of instruction, learning environment, previous background with the language, language learning ability, and the person’s motivation are some factors that should be considered. Do take heed of this advice if you want to be ahead with your German course.

English and German both originate from the Germanic language, so you have an advantage if you speak English. You’ll uncover many words that are similar in both languages known as cognates like brown (braun), swim (schwimmen), and house (das Haus), to name a few.

Studying German mustn’t be that hard for native English speakers. Translation always helps. If you don’t wish your advantage to become a language interference that is unnecessary, though, you need to fight your natural inclination to go back to your English ways. You have to teach yourself to really think in German as you increase your vocabulary. You should stop translating and really get the feel of being a German speaker.
